Days 1 to 3: Cuenca
Walking around the central part of Cuenca is like going back in time. The colonial architecture of the city has been well maintained. Along the banks of the river Tomebamba native women go to do their washing daily. Their colorful clothing makes the scene extremely picturesque.
Cuenca is famous for its gold and silver jewelry and for production of the authentic Panama Hats. A tour around the city of Cuenca visits the heart of the colonial city as well as an Inca wall which has been kept up since the 15th century and the best Panama Hat Factory.
The surroundings of Cuenca are also very beautiful. The landscape is a bit less abrupt than that of the Northern Andes, but the rolling hills and the rivers are spectacular. From Cuenca it is possible to organize trips to Ingapirca, the largest Inca ruins to be found in Ecuador. It is also possible to visit Cajas Recreational Reserve, Mazan Forest (for the birdwatching) or the picturesque towns of Gualaceo and Chordeleg.
Our program starts in Quito. We will drive south, passing Cotopaxi, some cities as Latacunga, Ambato and we will arrive to Riobamba. After lunch, we will visit this city including the Colonial Art Museum. Accommodation at a local hacienda or country inn.
Next morning drive from Riobamba to Alausi to take the public train which will bring you to Chanchán. In this short train ride, you will be able to do the "Devil´s nose" portion and enjoy the spectacular landscape. One and a half hours later you will arrive at Chanchan and the car will be waiting for you. Continue the trip to Cuenca. On the way you will visit the famous Inca Ruins of Ingapirca.
The Incas conquered and developed what now is Ecuador in only 100 years. The arrival of the Spanish stopped their northward expansion. However, there is some evidence of their establishments and Ingapirca is the best representation. It is said to have been a fortress, but it looks more like a ceremonial place. In the ruins it is possible to admire the fine Inca architecture and the trapezoidal windows and doors. The landscape around Ingapirca is quite beautiful and the Indian culture is well marked. After lunch, continue the trip to Cuenca. Arrival to Cuenca, accommodation at the hotel you prefer (see below).
The next day, you will do a city tour of the city, including the blue-domed cathedral, the flower market and the Conceptas museum. Continue the trip to Turi for a panorama view of Cuenca.
After lunch, visit the main handcraft shops and also the famous towns of Gualaceo and Chordeleg. These towns are near Cuenca and most of the people are involved in weaving straw, knitting sweaters, weaving belts, embroidering felted skirts and manufacturing silver jewellery. The mestizo woman wear bright colored skirts. Return to Cuenca and transfer to the airport to take the flight back to Quito.

Hello Laura, The trip was perfect, everything worked very well. The service in the office in Quito was very friendly and everybody there was helpful. The trip itself was wonderful and we are very happy about it. With friendly regards, Danny and Brigitte
PS: We were the oldest passengers on board and all the others could have been our children! But we did everything the others did and were not the slowest.
