The Galapagos have had several names. The name "Galapagos Islands" goes back to their accidental discovery in 1535 by Tómas de Berlanga, Bishop of Panama. In 1536 a boat with Spanish soldiers deserting the harshness of Pizarro, finding itself lost and unable to land for swirling currents and mist, called the islands "Las Islas Encantadas" (the bewitched isles). In 1892 the islands were officially renamed "Archipelago de Colon" by the Ecuadorian National Assembly to mark the 400th anniversary of Christopher Columbus' 1st journey.
