Many expeditions have disappeared in the Amazon, including Colonel Percy Fawcett in 1925. One of the early disasters was Isabelle de Godin's trip in 1749 across the Ecuadorian Andes to the Amazon, to meet her husband. The party of 41, including porters, set off, but defection and illness reduced the group to just Isabelle, who was found by Indians after wandering the jungle on her own for a week.
